The HALO Trust

One of Irish Aid’s key partners in the area of humanitarian demining is the NGO HALO Trust. HALO Trust (a registered charity in the UK and US) was established in 1988.

HALO Trust is the largest independent humanitarian demining operator in the world. It specialises in the removal of the hazardous debris of war and has over 6,000 full-time staff in 19 countries and territories, with on-going surveys into new regions.

HALO Trust is at the vanguard of mine action through constant analysis of new trends and ideas and it has set the standard for the sector through technical innovation and strong management.

Through its humanitarian assistance programme, Irish Aid is currently working with HALO Trust to clear mines and to conduct mine risk education in mine affected communities in Somaliland, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

We also worked with HALO Trust to clear mines in Mozambique and, in September 2015, the country declared that it was mine free. Ireland’s Minister of State for Development, Trade Promotion and North South Co-operation, Seán Sherlock, T.D., announced:

“It is very welcome that Mozambique has now cleared all of its known minefields and has today made its declaration of Mine Free Status under the Ottawa Treaty.

Disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons have historically been key foreign policy objectives for Ireland and we have made an important contribution over the last two decades to the international effort to end the suffering and casualties caused by anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions.

We have funded humanitarian demining activities in Mozambique since the 1990s through our overseas development assistance programme, Irish Aid, and have helped remove such detrimental remnants of past conflicts from the everyday lives of the Mozambican people.

I wholeheartedly congratulate the Government of Mozambique and HALO Trust on their role in this achievement.”
