Irish Aid pledges a further €5 million to Yemen humanitarian relief

16 March 2022Ireland today pledged a further €5 million to fund humanitarian relief in Yemen. The funding, provided to the Yemen Humanitarian Fund, will provide critical aid to people affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country.
This latest funding comes on top of €33m provided by Ireland to the Yemen Humanitarian Fund since 2012. Today’s announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney T.D., at a pledging event organised by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney T.D., said:
“Over 20 million people – half of them children – are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance due to the conflict in Yemen. Ireland will continue to support vital humanitarian aid for people caught up in this appalling crisis. We also support efforts to bring this conflict to an end. We urge all parties to the conflict to engage seriously and urgently with the UN-led process to secure a sustainable peace.”
Minister for Overseas Aid and Diaspora, Colm Brophy T.D., welcomed today’s announcement:
“The conflict in Yemen has left over three times the population of the island of Ireland facing a humanitarian catastrophe. Conflict has led to economic collapse and has left millions on the brink of famine. With so many pressing needs elsewhere in the world, there is a real risk of the Yemen conflict becoming a forgotten crisis. We must not let that happen. It is so important that the international community continues to fund relief efforts in Yemen. Ireland is proud to continue its partnership with the Yemen Humanitarian Fund to deliver aid and assistance to people who urgently need it.”

- Yemen remains one of the world’s most severe humanitarian disasters. In 2022, 23.4 million people are expected to require humanitarian assistance, as the people of Yemen endure the effects of ongoing conflict, extreme hunger, economic collapse, widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, and a lack of access to essential services.
- On a Wednesday 16 March, at a high-level pledging event organised by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Minister Simon Coveney pledged a further €5 million in funding to the Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF).
- The YHF mobilises and channels resources to humanitarian partners to respond to the critical needs of those affected by the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Since 2012, Ireland has provided over €33 million in humanitarian funding to the YHF.
